What I Do As A Pelvic Floor Therapist When I Have Bladder Urgency

Have you ever been on a long car ride and suddenly you have to pee, but there is no bathroom in sight for miles? Or maybe you are stuck in trafffic (I live in Southern California, so this is common) and you can't exit to get to a bathroom?
What can you do in this scenario?
This has happened to me a few times recently and what I noticed is that I'm usually anxious or stressed when it happens.

What Helps Me With Bladder Urgency
When I'm anxious or stressed, my stomach muscles are holding on tight. This can put pressure on the bladder and make it feel like I need to pee, even though my bladder may not be full yet.
For me, the first thing I try to do is to relax my stomach muscles.
I also try to take some deep breaths. This will help the stomach and pelvic floor muscles to relax and not press on the bladder, which will help decrease the sudden urge.
I then try to distract myself. I try to think of something pleasant or just keep my mind occupied to try to forget about my bladder.
These are some of the same strategies that I teach my clients, both in the clinic or through my online teachings.
How We Treat Bladder Urgency in the Clinic
In the clinic, patients often want exercises to do to help this. They want to be able to do kegels or a certain stretch to help with this.
I have worked with hundreds of patients in the clinic with bladder urgency and frequency, and most of the time they don't have weak pelvic floor muscles, so kegels will not help them.
Occasionally they have tight pelvic floor muscles, and chronically tight pelvic floor muscles can press on the bladder and contribute to the sense of urgency.
Most of the time my clients in the clinic don't have anything wrong with their pelvic floor muscles. The muscles are working as they should be.
This is frustrating to patients, because if they could just do kegels, that would be something concrete they could do to fix this.
I don't stress when I find their pelvic floor muscles are working as they should be, because most of the time they need to work on are these bladder habits and strategies.
Online Bladder Course
I created this online bladder course because what I found most often was not a pelvic floor dysfunction, but that changing some strategies and habits could improve their bladder urgency and frequency.
I teach the same thing online that I teach my clients in the clinic and it works. The 3 stratgies that I use for myself comes from this knowledge, except in the online course I teach you even more strategies so you can find the ones that work for you. This is exactly what I teach to my in-person clients, as well.
The online course has over 30 videos teaching you what to do in different scenarios when bladder urgency or leakage arises, and how to build better bladder habits to prevent the urgency and frequency.

You can go on road trips and to parties without worrying about where the bathroom is or being afraid of bladder leakage. I have helped hundreds of people overcome this. It takes time, but you can improve this, too.
